History

Now in its 14th year, the Soundboks Oz Grom Open presented by O’Neill has become one of the most iconic junior surfing events in the world. Hosted annually in Lennox Head by Le-Ba Boardriders, this world-class competition draws elite under-18 surfers from across Australia and beyond—showcasing the future of the sport on one of Australia’s most picturesque coastlines.

The event features both U14 to U18 age divisions, where surfers compete for national rankings and selection to represent Australia at the ISA World Junior Championships, as well as the WSL Traeger Grills Pro Junior division, where surfers under 21 battle to qualify for the WSL World Junior Championships.

A World-Class Format

Built to mirror the professionalism of the WSL Tour, the event includes:

  • A five-person judging panel made up of current ASP WCT & WQS judges

  • Computerised scoring and digital priority boards

  • A two-level scaffold tower and dedicated athlete zone

  • Full food, music, and heat-preparation facilities

  • A global live webcast, now watched in over 14 countries

In 2024, ISA World Junior Champion Dane Henry earned a perfect 10-point ride, wowing the crowd and generating over 1.1 million views on Instagram, a testament to the elite talent on display.

History & Legacy

Founded in 2012 by Le-Ba Boardriders, the event was created to raise the bar in junior surfing by offering a platform that combined professional standards with grassroots values. As former Le-Ba President Jonathon Hewett recalled:

“We wanted to offer something unique to the future stars of the sport and give something back to the community with an event that had longevity.”

In 2018, the event expanded to include a WSL-sanctioned boys and girls Pro Junior division. The judging format—developed exclusively by Australian Surfing Professional Head Judge Pritamo Ahrendt—introduces a repercharge round, giving surfers a second chance to progress.

As David Chegwyn from original sponsor Skullcandy said:

“Le-Ba has done an amazing job turning the event into a platform where grommets can now surf all the way through to the new WSL JQS division. It’s grassroots and world-class all in one.”

Community, Culture & Tourism

More than a competition, the Oz Grom Open is a celebration of youth, surf culture, and the coastal lifestyle. Held during the winter season, it brings a welcome economic boost to Lennox Head and the Northern Rivers—known locally as “Christmas in July”.

From local cafes and retailers to accommodation providers and tour operators, the event draws families, surf fans, and travellers to the region, generating significant tourism benefits while spotlighting Australia’s next generation of surfing champions.

“The Grom Comp embraces so much of the Aussie surfer’s journey — the road trips, the friendships, the chance to prove yourself in Australia’s biggest grom event,” said Rob Bain, O’Neill Marketing Director. “We’re stoked to be part of it.”

Whether you’re a surf enthusiast, a travelling family, or a regional explorer, the Soundboks Oz Grom Open offers the perfect excuse to discover the beauty and culture of the Northern Rivers.
